Route description WAB - Regional Route C: Krumbach - Kirchschlag
Regional route C starts at Krumbach municipal office, close to the “Krumbach Markt” bus station. If you do not wish to leave Krumbach just yet, then a visit to the Museumsdorf (museum village) is highly recommended.
The very start of the route is slightly downhill along Marktstraße, then before the bridge to Pfarrbach we turn left onto Tiefenbachstraße and head out towards Katzentürl and Lindenhof. We follow the road uphill as it curves right, and then follow the Lindenhof road towards Bad Schönau. We then reach Rosenkranz Chapel with a view of Krumbach Castle; then we head left along a forest path marked out in red - also part of the Marienweg to Mariazell. Narrow paths lead us past the Platz der Stille (Place of remoteness and tranquillity) and on to Gehöft Strobl. The route then goes right and we cross the Tiefenbach stream on a wooden walkway. Upon reaching the next crossroads we head right and follow the road, complete with central reservation, for some time.
After house no. 133 and just after a bridge, we turn left at a rest bench into a house driveway. Turn left, go past the house and walk right, curving past the house and ascending up on the D9 hiking route and on to Marienweg. Only a few minutes later, we turn right instantly after turning left, and start a steep ascent. Two minutes later, we cross a forest road. Shortly afterwards, the woodland path merges into another forest road, and we turn right at this point. We leave the woods and enter the rural, cultivated landscapes of the Bucklige Welt. Less than 100 metres after leaving the woods, turn right onto a field path and see Gehöft Bacherbauer. We go past the farm on the left, go slightly uphill up a rough track and then come across a paved road. We then turn right and follow Panoramastraße (Panoramic way) for an hour or so until we reach Kirchschlag. Many noble families considered Kirchschlag Castle to be their home, however the Castle is now freely accessible as a passion play site.
At the Passionsspielhaus (passion play Wendy house) in Kirchschlag, we cross a bridge over the Zöbernbach stream to reach Passionsspielstraße then turn back onto the hiking route directly after the church and before the stream. Shortly afterwards, we head right onto Kirchengasse (Church Street) at the rose garden and go over two bridges back to Hauptplatz (main square). At this point, turn left and then head right directly after Hotel Post to see the information board for the Viennese Alps and the Kaiser Franz Josef monument. Regional Route C ends here.
It is possible to follow the Viennese Alps on foot to Bad Schönau and to subsequently continue with Regional Route D on to Krumbach. Kirchschlag Castle is always worth a visit. There is also the option to return to Krumbach with the service bus as well as staying in Kirchschlag overnight. The bus stop is on Hauptstrasse alongside Hotel Post.
