Gourmet tips for Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”

Just south of Vienna, there are plenty of destinations for big fans of fine cuisine

Just an hour outside of Vienna, there are numerous top restaurants in Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”.

Saffron-fennel foam soup, salmon trout with buckwheat or poached pear with salted caramel ice cream. All accompanied by a cool glass of Veltliner. And all this in an old farmhouse on a hill, with a view of Bad Schönau, Ödhöfen and the green hills of the surrounding countryside.

All this is available at Triad in Krumbach, one of the top eateries in Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”. It is also particularly cosy in the garden of Restaurant Unger in Pitten with its old, gnarled trees and the wooden gazebo that provides shade on sunny days.

Upscale cuisine in Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”

In Katzelsdorf, a long, narrow road leads up the hill to the Kupfer-Dachl restaurant. Once there, foam soup from parsley root, golden beets with apple, Szechuan pepper and cream cheese or ice cream from Eis-Greissler, which is also at home in Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”, await.

And if you ever feel like saddle of venison with mugwort or a fresh carrot soup with nettles, the “Gasthof Stocker” in Lembach is the place to be. There, herbalist Gerda Stocker picks her ingredients from the meadows around her inn, gives tips on daisies, ribwort and dandelion and processes them directly on her 90-year-old wood-burning stove.
