Travelling by bike through Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”

Whether it’s a leisurely afternoon round or a challenging tour – the land of 1,000 hills offers cycling routes for beginners and professionals, as well as the most beautiful views in Lower Austria.

First take the train (or the car) and then get on your bike: ÖBB regional trains, the “Aspangbahn” and the A2 take holidaymakers from Vienna or Graz to Austria’s “Bucklige Welt” in around 90 minutes.
Here, 400 kilometres of cycle paths will take you over green hills with fantastic views as far as Rax, Schneeberg and Semmering. Bicycles and e-bikes can be rented locally, for example, at the Kirchschlag bike rental or one of the twelve e-bike rental stations.
The bike experts at the rental points are happy to offer tips on the most beautiful cycle paths in the area – such as the Zöbernbach cycle path, which is tarmacked throughout and runs flat along the stream bed from Kirchschlag to Aspang, or the Grenzlandroute, which leads from Zöbern to Styria and back in just under two and a half hours.

On the EuroVelo 9 through the land of 1,000 hills

The Lower Austria portion of EuroVelo 9, which leads from Wiener Neustadt to Wechselland, is somewhat more demanding. From Seebenstein, you cycle through the first few hills of Austria’s “Bucklige Welt”, past the “Türkensturz” ruins and the weir in Warth, which is a nice spot to take a break on hot days – you can cool off well.

Stations for short and long breaks

If the weather changes its mind on the way, there are cosy wine taverns and inns along the cycle paths where you can wait out rain showers with a glass of cider or even a spritzer. And if you need a longer break, you can stop off at a Bed+Bike establishment. These types of accommodation are geared towards cyclists and ensure that both bike and biker feel completely at home.
